Bathrooms befitting five-star getaways

The term ‘resort-style bathroom’ is often bandied about to the point where it has become unclear what exactly constitutes such an Inclusion in a home.

Unpacking this term will help homeowners narrow down which elements they want to Include in their oasis to make it as relaxing and enticing as a first-class holiday offering.

“Resort-style amenities refer to the luxurious features and services often found in vacation resorts, which are designed to offer a premium experience, and enhance relaxation and enjoyment,” DKO Associate Lionel Mawwhinny said.

“Luxury bathrooms often feature spacious and open layouts maximising comfort and accessibility.

“This might include separate spots for the shower, the tub and the toilet to enhance privacy and ease of use.

“Custom cabinetry and built-in storage solutions help to keep the space uncluttered, with options like hidden shelving and floating vanities “

According to Papalia Homes Managing Director Leo Papala, what sets resort-style bathrooms apart are luxury finishings such as large format tiling and the materials used in benchtop finishes such as marble, stone and natural products.

“Large tile sizes are anywhere from 600mm by 1200mm to a 1600mm by 3200mm large format porcelain sheet,” he said.

These tiles open up the bathroom, minimise the number of joints and give the feel of a sizeable marble or granite feel slab, according to Mr Papalia

For a truly enviable relaxation experience, lighting plays a significant part in influencing your bathroom or ensuite’s atmosphere.

“Lighting is used to enhance the mood of a luxury bathroom,” Oswald Homes Senior Designer Michal Kurtis said.

“Think strip LED lighting with changing colours or a feature chandelier to show off the exclusivity of the space or item within.”

Mr Papalia said using wall sconces to give extra lighting by your vanity mirror was also another popular option elevating the resort-style bathroom experience.

When it comes to the architecture of the bathroom itself, he said curves were in vogue, adding a one-of-a-kind focal point.

“People are putting curves in to soften corners such as wrapping them around a freestanding bath,” Mr Papalia said, adding that materials like mosaics, laminate or timber are suitable here, as they can be bent to suit the curve.

According to Mr Kurtis, notable design twists also include extensive raking window awnings, exotic prints and even doors with special metal or timber features

“Architectural intrigue can also be found in aspects such as freestanding walls with hidden showers behind them,” he said.

Uniting the indoors and outdoors while maintaining privacy is another wet area innovation reminiscent of a tranquil five-star getaway.

“Luxury bathrooms tend to utilise courtyards and pavilion spaces to separate internal zones while connecting the outside with the inside,” Mr Kurtis said

“You might see an internal courtyard, which opens the bathroom up to a private terrarium with a plunge pool or an outdoor shower, or openings to frame or accent a distant landscape view or a private garden space.”
